The path
by   Lee

The first time I went down the path,
when you appeared, I was surprised.
We moved down the path, we talked as strangers,
keeping our distance till we reached the fork.
Each day, you joined me on the path,
we became less than strangers, talking, laughing.
I enjoyed these trips to the fork,
then we went our separate ways.
You called me friend, I should have warned you,
I should have stopped and told you
I don't do friendships well.
I didn't, I failed you.
I should find another path.
Each day we met on the path.
The weather, didn't matter, a beautiful day.
with birds singing, sun shining, in my mind.
My heart pounding, we were together.
I can feel the change, in me,
I am no longer your friend.
In my mind and heart, I wanted more,
to be more than you would ever allow,
or could give to me.
I know you didn't understand, I never told you.
You never knew what happened, why I changed.
We would argue, you called me mean.
I can see and feel, both our pain.
I am alone on the path,
I see you with others, I hide my tears.
Another friendship ruined, another person hurt.
Love again out of my reach,
my heart tells my feet find another path.
