A Simple Smile
by Stephanie Renee Wagner

She sits alone in the dark corner
no friends to tell her she's special
no family to tell her she's loved

Everyone walks right by her
pushing and shoving her everywhere
as if she's really not there

They talk about her all the time
even when she's right there
calling her names that only destroy her more

After school she goes to the only place she feels safe
a place where no one can hear her cries
a place where she can be free

No one gives her a chance
they judge her based on what they see
not caring who she really is

She doesn't understand why people won't take the time
the time to get to know her
and to understand who she really is

She decides to endure one more day
hoping and praying someone will treat her right
whether it's just a "hi" or a simple smile

While walking through the hall she sees a guy
and with one smile from him
she knows her life will be different.
