Sun Rising
by Kate Richardson
My over-eager heart rises in the east
With fervent hopes of an encounter with you, the sparkling night sky
Your glittering stars have eluded me for far too long
The dark, dark sky lingers just out of reach
My heart rejoices in the chase, this game of cat and mouse
The raging heat of my heart longs dearly for your cool blackness
As fire yearns for fuel
I want to enter your life
And with me will come the radiant sun
Don?t let the rays burn you; I will shield you
My over-eager heart is rising ever faster
With the thought of even brushing past you
But the pink rays rising just before me push you gently out of reach
I glance across the mixed-up sky
Where light and dark don?t know the meaning of love
I see your heart, the softly glowing orb sinking lower in the sky
And I want it to be mine
I try to reach across the great expanse
But my fingers touch nothing
And push you farther toward the horizon
The day dawns bright, clear and ugly
For you have once again eluded me
I sit high in the sky and, to pass the time
Envy the grasses blowing together
Caressing each other
Not having to worry of chasing their love
They must be blissful
My defeated heart finally sets in the west and watches
Its one true love re-occupy the sky
I no longer reach toward you, but quietly slip away
Leaving a golden-pink trail behind me
I take one more look at the grass to smile at its seeming bliss
And one small blade turns upward
His familiar gaze following a lone robin, longingly, across the moon.
