The Whisper
by Norman Dean VanPelt

 Leaving my love,
   is like departing for war.
 Leaving her arms as
   she locks the door.
 Walking down the street,
   all I can hear
       Is her heart beat,
          as it pounds in fear.
I hear the sound of a whisper,
                           or is it a whimper,
                                      I think,
                                       I hear,
                                        I love you.
