the day that envy woke
by Doug Roberson
I still recall the words you spoke
on the day that envy woke.
jealousy found its way to me
and wound around my dignity.
never the glance of a lover
nor sweet whispers to another,
yet, envy could so smother
my heart.
it was, instead, the gentle light
caressing you with delight;
it was the air across your lips
that your every breath would kiss;
the blanket warming you in sleep
made me want to kneel and weep.
all the things where I long to be
fill me with that fierce envy
and thus awoke my jealousy.
