With My Affection
by Alice W. Mitchell

My love,
I am not wholly indifferent
when it comes to you.

It is just that you remind me
of what I do not now have,
Of what I may never have.

Is it fair
to offer yourself to me?
It is such a happy dream.

So I may believe
I will be able to begin to eat again,
To drink in peace, in love,
To cover myself in still water.

I think, my love,
that through no fault of my own
I don't even know who you are.
