May life be good to you, my friend

By: Bill

May life be good to you, my friend,
May love... in your soul to dwell,
May your life know only bliss, my friend,
For mine... has known but hell.

And in another time and place, my friend,
When joy was all we knew,
When God smiled down upon your face,
He blessed the soul... that’s you.

For together we’ll always be, my friend,
But beneath our crying eyes,
Is the thought that maybe once, my friend,
We’d find truth... instead of lies.

For we call each other friend, you see,
And though we hold that friendship true,
Deep down below the surface, dear,
Is the love- I thought you knew.

So, I pray to God for you, my friend,
That this dream will never cease...
Or that I’ll awaken soon in deep despair,
To find that life was God’s caprice.

For, if I found you were not real, my friend,
If I awoke to find a dream,
Would life hold simple pleasures,
Could some joys from life... I glean.

No! For I’m accustomed to your laughter, dear,
And I long to hear your mind,
And if I searched for love forever, dear,
It is in You that love I’d find.
