The Beating Heart

By: Ben C Pusakulich, Jr.

The room was quiet and very dark
As silence was broken by a beating heart.

I turned around quickly to see who was there
and was surprised of the sight of the woman I
once had so much cared.

How could this be? What does she want?
Why is it me she has come to haunt?

Our spirits were closer than ever could be
Her love, our love was all I would need.

Everything I visioned the future to become
Suddenly became secondary to the one I loved.

But she saw things differently, for she held the material knife.
As she prowled towards me with the uncertainties of life.

She rose up her dagger and drove it into my heart.
I gasped and screamed and pushed us apart.

She came back at me with tears in her eyes.
And gave me a kiss I could not despise.

I found myself with her lying in bed.
"Are you ok? You had a nightmare," she said.

I said I had and asked her to hold me
As I laid my head upon her chest and asked if she loved me.

The room was quiet and very dark.
As silence was broken... by her beating heart.
