Just Down the Hall
Just down the hall, I hear your soft breathing,
My Morning Glory, arising each day
Rustling as you move in bunny-soft jammies
Greeting me with smiles in a most cheery way
Just down the hall, I hear you play dress up
Speaking with friends, some real, some imagined
Tea parties and school, and don’t forget doctor
Stomping and laughing and being old-fashioned
Just down the hall, I hear a phone ringing
Boys and school and dates and prom
Loud conversations and soft whispered secrets
Excitedly sharing a few things with Mom
Just down the hall, the pastor is standing
Along with your groom and guests in the pews
Shared promises, dreams, and hope for the future
Radiant smiles and glowing love hues
Just down the hall, Mother is sleeping
Waiting for angels and rest from her cares
Tears overflowing for memories tender
Long days ahead to face without her
Just down the hall, the grandkids are playing
Cookies and milk with grandma they say
Checkers and board games and jacks on the floor
Special times, though shorter each day
Just down the hall, soft footsteps I hear
Can’t make out who or what draws near
Old wrinkled hands reach out for my family
Sighing I realize - they all are here
