Without Me

By: Joe F Yancey

As you walk down that aisle without me
What can I do, but watch miserably.
I smile as you pass by,
Not letting you look into my eyes.
For overpowering the smile
A tear falls down to the tile.

I begin to think back to the day we first met
And how I felt that you’d be mine someday ahead.
The music is playing as you approach your groom
But to me, you and I are alone in the room.
All those nights together where we sat and talked
The times I wanted to grab your hand as we both walked.

I confessed my feelings to you before.
What did he do that meant so much more?
The priest begins to unite you together
And now you will be his forever.
The words 'I do' are spoken out across the church.
I never imagined how much hearing it could hurt.

“Speak now or forever hold your peace,"
I want to stand, but I stay in my seat.
I can’t ruin your happiness, by being selfish on your day.
“I now pronounce you man and wife,” the priest will now say.
As you turn and begin to leave the room
I smile again at you and your groom.

The tears still fall, but I hide it well.
And still I watch after the rice has fell.
I receive a hug before you are gone.
Then I must let you go complete life’s song.
I stand in silence hoping it’s a dream
That you’re going off to live your life without me.
