Mother

By: Brooke Miyoko Nitta

I remember all the pain I've caused you, Mom,
All the nights you stayed awake to find me not home
The tears you shed in front of my blank face each day
I was uncaring, cold as a stone

Now I see what I have done
I am sorry for the actions I cannot undo
How I wish life was like a tape I could rewind and re-record
I was uncaring, cold as a stone

When the men in blue took me away
Your back did not turn to look the other way
Though I knew it was you who had called out of concern
Anger arose and my mouth became uncontrolled
I was uncaring, cold as a stone

All the times you would ask me why
The only thing I could do was say "goodbye"
Out the door of your house, your heart and your mind
It is what I felt would be more kind
No more yelling, screaming, and pain
This is the day the desert saw rain
I was uncaring, cold as a stone

When I came back to your sheltering wing
I was afraid your harsh voice would ring
Now you are a good friend
I am glad the love did not end
When I was uncaring, cold as a stone
